Square plugins for WordPress compared

Updated October 9, 2026 · 7 min read

There is no single "Square plugin for WordPress". Square itself does not publish a WordPress plugin; the options come from WooCommerce, independent developers and automation tools, and each covers a different part of the job. This comparison sets them side by side. StockEven is our product, so it is included with its limits stated as plainly as the others'.

Install counts and ratings are taken from WordPress.org in October 2026 and change over time.

The short answer

  • Square payments on a WooCommerce store: the official WooCommerce Square extension.
  • Payments plus a richer feature set (orders, customers, loyalty) and willing to pay: WC Shop Sync Pro.
  • Reliable two-way stock between the shop and the website: StockEven, on its own or next to the official extension.
  • Simple one-off automations, such as a notification or a spreadsheet row: Zapier or Make.

WooCommerce Square (official)

The default choice and the only one maintained by WooCommerce itself. It adds Square as a payment method (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square gift cards and, in the US, Cash App Pay) and keeps product names, prices, descriptions, images, categories and stock aligned from one system of record.

Good for: shops that want Square payments online and manage their catalog in one place.

Watch out for: one side always overwrites the other. WooCommerce's documentation notes that automatic inventory checks can replace a quantity entered manually in WooCommerce. Reviews on WordPress.org mention setup problems with caching and onboarding, and slow support; the average rating is 2.1 out of 5.

WC Shop Sync (WooSquare)

Listed on WordPress.org as "WC Shop Sync – Square Payment Gateway and Product Synchronization for WooCommerce", by WPExperts. The free version includes Square payments and product sync for simple and variable products. Automatic product sync, automatic order and stock sync, refund sync, customer sync, loyalty, saved cards and sync logs are in the Pro version.

Good for: shops that want one paid plugin covering payments, orders, customers and catalog.

Watch out for: the free version's inventory sync is a manual action; real-time stock needs Pro.

StockEven

A narrow tool: stock levels only, in both directions, within seconds. Products are matched by SKU. Where the two systems disagree, the store owner chooses the correct number once. Changes travel as changes (sale, refund, delivery, recount), are queued if a side is down, and an hourly check corrects any drift.

Good for: shops where stock changes on both sides every day and overselling is the problem to solve. Works next to the official extension, which keeps handling payments.

Watch out for: no payments and no product data sync, by design. Free up to 50 products; larger catalogs need a paid plan.

Zapier and Make

Both have Square and WooCommerce connectors. They are good for simple, one-directional automations: add a row to a sheet for each Square sale, notify a channel when an online order arrives. Building reliable two-way stock sync on them is possible but fragile: each step has to handle retries, avoid echo loops and cope with both sides changing at once, and costs grow with the number of tasks.

Square Online instead of WordPress

Square's own website builder, Square Online, shares stock with the POS without any plugin. For a shop starting from zero it is the simplest route. Shops already running WordPress usually stay, because of their content, search rankings, design and plugins.
